People frequently ask me if they should pay for counseling privately or if they should use their insurance. This is a very personal decision and I want you to be informed.
Benefits of using insurance
- The cost. Mental health benefits are offered by insurance companies so that you do not have to compromise you or your family’s mental health to stay financially stable. Mental health is just as important as physical health. Many insurance companies allow for ongoing psychotherapy. We will work together to navigate your treatment in conjunction with your insurance benefits.
Benefits of private pay
- Your records stay confidential. When you use health insurance benefits, you will receive a mental health diagnosis. This diagnosis will help to determine your treatment plan which we will collaboratively discuss in therapy. Nonetheless, your insurance record will contain this information and it may be retrievable on background information. If you need security clearance, want to join the military, or are involved in some court cases, your health records may be accessed.
- Often times insurance companies do not cover couples counseling, group therapy, or other aspects of psychotherapy. Many insurances provide a only a few sessions per year. When you choose private pay, you can engage in therapy whenever and however you choose.
